Since I animated the mechanism (in very simplified form) of antigenic shift, of course I had to do the same for the mechanism of antigenic drift. Again, please keep in mind that these 40-some second videos only serve to show a general idea of the mechanism of action for these phenomena. What I want to achieve foremost is to explicitly show two different ways by which the flu virus can change to create a new strain, or version, of itself. In the final post of the flu series, I'll sum up why I've spent so much time on this point.
And as always, if you see anything you think is incorrect, call me on it, and I'll do some researching to clear up the discrepancies.
